New student.

She'll be a bit late for the new term, but Noriko Kikuchi will be joining us from Japan tomorrow. I'll pick her up at the airport; I needed to run into the city for a couple of things anyway, and I do like to meet the new ones first. There's a possibility that she will need some fairly extensive help with her English, but I've already had some thoughts about that.

I'm taking the lack of team deployment as a good sign. Do we know anything about her circumstances yet, need to make any special preparations/precautions?

Nothing that they mentioned specifically. Usually a good sign, I think? Her powers are apparently energy-related, but nothing dangerous enough to preclude her flying commercial air.

Forge, "apparently energy-related" is one of the great and useful euphemisms in cases like this. Mostly because it can be sub-divided into "blows things up", "makes electronic equipment go wonky", "burns stuff", and "glows".

I always hope for "glows".

Well, we've got a handful of telepaths, and I know that at the very least both Shiro and I speak fluant Japanese. Should be enough to help get her through a crash course of conversational English.

As far as I know, only the professor and I crash the language barrier that easily -- I'm not sure why, maybe it has to do with the fact I don't seem capable of learning any worth a damn. And even though there should be no lasting effects from this weekend, I'd just as soon have skipped out on too much commuting this week. I'd rather not news of another collapse get back to Laurie with what's going on with her mother.
